Itinerary Overview

7:30 AM – Depart from Addis Ababa
Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or designated meeting point in Addis Ababa. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Ethiopian highlands, heading north along the road to Bahir Dar.

9:30 AM – Arrive at Debre Libanos Monastery
Arrive at one of Ethiopia’s most revered religious sites, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. Explore the monastery grounds and the beautifully decorated church, which plays a central role in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition. If open, you may also visit the museum featuring ancient manuscripts, crosses, and religious artifacts.

10:30 AM – Meet Local Monks & Learn About the Monastery’s History
Enjoy a brief cultural exchange with local clergy and gain insight into monastic life, traditions, and the story of Saint Tekle Haymanot—who, according to legend, prayed standing for seven years in a cave nearby.

11:30 AM – Visit the Cave & Holy Spring
Take a short guided walk to the cave where Saint Tekle Haymanot is said to have meditated, and see the sacred spring that continues to attract pilgrims today.

12:30 PM – Lunch Break with a View
Enjoy lunch at a local lodge or scenic viewpoint restaurant overlooking the breathtaking Jemma River Gorge—often referred to as “Ethiopia’s Grand Canyon.” (Lunch can be packed or arranged in advance with a lodge or local guesthouse.)

1:30 PM – Visit the Portuguese Bridge
Take a short drive and hike to the 16th-century Portuguese Bridge, believed to have been built by Portuguese missionaries (though some claim it is of more recent Ethiopian origin). From here, admire stunning views of the gorge and, during the rainy season, cascading waterfalls.

2:30 PM – Optional Nature Walk or Birdwatching
If time and interest permit, enjoy a brief nature walk in the surrounding area. Debre Libanos and the Jemma Gorge are known for birdlife, including the endemic Gelada baboons, Lammergeiers (bearded vultures), and various raptors.

3:30 PM – Begin Drive Back to Addis Ababa
Relax and enjoy the ride back to the city with opportunities to stop for photos or stretch breaks along the way.

5:00 PM – Drop-off in Addis Ababa
Return to your hotel or selected drop-off point by late afternoon.
