Day 01: Addis Ababa City Tour

After breakfast at your hotel, begin your exploration of Addis Ababa with a scenic drive up to Mount Entoto, which offers panoramic views of the city sprawling below. The area, once the capital of Ethiopia before the founding of Addis Ababa, is dotted with eucalyptus forests and historic churches.

Descend into the heart of the city and visit the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to archaeological and historical treasuresβ€”including the world-renowned fossilized remains of Lucy, one of the oldest hominid skeletons ever discovered.

Next, head to the iconic St. George’s Cathedral, built in 1896 to commemorate Ethiopia’s victory at the Battle of Adwa. Admire its distinctive octagonal architecture and view religious artifacts in its adjoining museum.

Continue to the Ethnographic Museum, located within the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie. This museum offers a fascinating insight into Ethiopia’s diverse cultures, traditions, and religions.

Conclude your city tour with a visit to Merkato, the largest open-air market in East Africa. Founded by the Italians in the 1930s, it is a bustling maze of shops and stalls offering everything from spices and coffee to textiles and crafts.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner at a cultural restaurant, complete with live music, traditional dances, and a variety of national dishes.

Day 02: Day Trip to Debre Libanos & Portuguese Bridge

After breakfast, depart Addis Ababa for a full-day excursion to Debre Libanos Monastery and the nearby Portuguese Bridge, located approximately 105 km northwest of the capitalβ€”a scenic drive of about 2.5 hours through highland landscapes.

Upon arrival, visit the Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. This revered religious site includes a small but rich museum showcasing ancient manuscripts, religious artifacts, ceremonial garments, and traditional items used by the monastery’s clergy.

Explore the interior of the monastery church, adorned with colorful stained glass windows and home to the tomb of its saintly founder.

Afterward, take a short hike to the Portuguese Bridge, an impressive stone structure believed to have been built in the 16th century. The bridge is set amidst a dramatic gorge with waterfalls and is often surrounded by a troop of endemic Gelada baboons. The area offers stunning views of the Jemma River Gorge, a perfect backdrop for a picnic or local lunch.

In the late afternoon, return to Addis Ababa, enjoying the scenic countryside and the opportunity to observe rural life, traditional tukuls (round huts), and a variety of bird species along the way.
